ABOUT THE SHOW

Seventeen-year-old Evan Hansen has spent much of his life feeling invisible. When a classmate’s death and a letter never meant to be seen pull him into a grieving family’s life, Evan is suddenly offered the connection and sense of belonging he has always wanted. But as one misunderstanding grows into a far-reaching story, Evan must confront the consequences of his choices—and what it truly means to be seen.

Featuring a deeply personal story and a soaring contemporary score, Dear Evan Hansen explores anxiety, grief, family, social media, and the universal need for connection.

WHAT TO PREPARE

Please prepare:

​

• A 32-bar cut from a song of your choice in the style of the show
• A 60–90-second monologue that best showcases your abilities

 

An accompanist will be provided. Please bring clearly marked sheet music in the correct key.

All auditionees should also bring a current headshot and theatrical résumé.

 

CALLBACKS

Wednesday, October 28, 2026:  7:00–10:00 p.m.

Callbacks will be held by invitation only. Invited performers will read selected scenes and sing material from the show. There will be no dance or movement call.

 

VIDEO SUBMISSIONS

Performers unable to attend in person may submit a video audition to auditions@cassidytheatre.com before October 25, 2026.

Video submissions should include the same 32-bar vocal selection and 60–90-second monologue required for in-person auditions. Please attach a current headshot and theatrical résumé and include your full name and contact information.

 

CASTING

All roles are open. Cassidy Theatre is seeking artists ages 16 and older. Performers of all backgrounds, races, ethnicities, gender identities, body types, and abilities are encouraged to audition.

The ages below refer to the ages the actors will portray and not necessarily the performers’ actual ages.

 

EVAN HANSEN
A high school senior living with intense social anxiety and a desperate desire to connect. Intelligent, sincere, and painfully self-conscious, Evan finds himself at the center of a story that grows far beyond his control. This role requires exceptional emotional range and a strong contemporary pop/rock sound.

Vocal range: G2–B4; pop tenor

 

HEIDI HANSEN
Evan’s devoted mother. Overworked and stretched thin, Heidi loves her son fiercely but struggles to reach him as the distance between them grows. She is warm, resilient, vulnerable, and determined to repair their relationship.

Vocal range: F3–E♭5; pop alto/mezzo with a strong belt

 

ZOE MURPHY
Connor’s younger sister and one of Evan’s classmates. Perceptive, guarded, and quietly searching for an honest understanding of her complicated relationship with her brother. Her growing connection with Evan allows her to imagine something beyond her family’s grief.

Vocal range: F3–E5; pop soprano/mezzo

 

CONNOR MURPHY
Zoe’s older brother. Angry, isolated, and deeply troubled, Connor becomes the catalyst for the story and continues to appear through Evan’s imagination and the version of him Evan creates. This role requires intensity, vulnerability, and a strong contemporary sound.

Vocal range: G2–G4; pop baritenor

 

CYNTHIA MURPHY
Connor and Zoe’s mother. Open, nurturing, and determined to hold onto every remaining connection to her son, Cynthia embraces Evan and the comfort his story offers—even as grief strains her family.

Vocal range: F♯3–E5; pop soprano/mezzo with a strong belt

 

LARRY MURPHY
Connor and Zoe’s father. Reserved, practical, and emotionally guarded, Larry struggles to express his grief. Beneath his controlled exterior is a father searching for stability, answers, and a way forward.

Vocal range: F♯2–G4; pop baritenor

 

JARED KLEINMAN
Evan’s family friend and classmate. Quick-witted, sarcastic, and outwardly self-assured, Jared uses humor and bravado to conceal his own insecurities. Strong comic instincts and precise contemporary vocals are essential.

Vocal range: A2–B4; pop tenor

 

ALANA BECK
An ambitious, accomplished classmate who throws herself into causes and activities. Her confidence and relentless drive conceal a deep loneliness and need to be recognized. This role requires emotional depth beneath a polished, energetic exterior.

Vocal range: F3–E5; pop soprano/mezzo

 

EXPANDED ENSEMBLE

Cassidy Theatre intends to cast an ensemble of approximately 6–10 additional artists to help create the wider world of the story. Ensemble members may portray students, parents, community members, and voices within the show’s online and social-media landscape.

Ensemble performers will help shape the production’s visual storytelling and may be featured through live staging, vocals, and integrated media or projection work. We are seeking versatile artists who can create specific, truthful characters and work collaboratively as part of a contemporary ensemble.

 

CONTENT ADVISORY

Dear Evan Hansen contains strong language and mature themes, including mental health, suicide, grief, substance use, and the impact of social media. Those considering auditioning are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the material before registering.
